This house in the Sasavane village in the Alibag area (across the harbor from Mumbai) involved designing houses for two sisters within the same property. The requirement for both houses is completely different with one house configured as a simple ‘C’ shaped ground floor structure around a courtyard and water body, and the other a ground and one storied structure to encompass the view of the larger orchard in which it is situated. Between the houses are located the common facilities such as a shed, living space, a lap pool and a gymnasium. This common ground or infrastructure was located as a way of bringing families together while also allowing them, when desirable, to retreat into their own private domains on either side.
